School Based Services

Western Queens Consultation Center has been working closely with schools since the day we opened our doors over 30 years ago. In 2008 we began opening satellite clinics within New York City Public schools. This service has allowed our licensed therapists to better serve children and their families with the added support of their school.

Parents/Guardians who wish to participate in this program may contact WQCC’s School Based Services office or speak to their participating school’s guidance counselor. Intake appointments are scheduled at the convenience of the family at either the host school or WQCC’s office. Services are provided on a weekly basis within the school during a minor subject class as recommended by the school staff. Our licensed therapists use a combination of Activity/Play Therapy, Verbal/Psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and other evidence based practices to address the behavioral health needs of their particular student.

Our therapists work collaboratively with the school’s staff including teachers, guidance counselors, parent coordinators, and principals to help students with a variety of behavioral health needs that are affecting their performance in school, at home, or in the community. It is important to note that the content of counseling sessions are kept confidential and not part of the student’s school record. However, with the permission of student’s guardians and as needed, school staff can be part of the treatment planning process.

Summer Session

Meeting during the summer can be a very constructive experience as students explore their anticipation towards returning to school and their transition into a new grade or a new school after graduation. Individual, group, and family sessions are available. Some students and families find joining one of our summer therapy groups a helpful and enjoyable additional service.

During the summer, if students require or request continuation of services, Students may choose to meet with their therapist during Summer School or at the School Based Services office in our Jackson Heights clinic.
